The Computer Closet Project, begun in 1999, has proven very successful in accomplishing three important goals:- It provides usable computers to people who cannot afford them, but need to learn to use them to become more productive.
- It postpones for at least a few years the ultimate destination of PCs as landfill.
- It provides an outlet for young people interested in computers, and teaching people about computers a way to accomplish those goals.
Due to the past success, and our need for more space and facilities we are pleased to announce that the following organizations have agreed to assist us with the collection, refurbishment, and distribution of donated computers: Kokomo Rotary Club Kokomo Early Risers Rotary Club Salvation Army IVY Tech State College Kokomo Boy Scouts of America, Sagamore Council Explorer Program With the rapid advances of technology into virtually every walk of life and work place, it is imperative that we do whatever possible to insure that everyone without the means but with the desire to succeed have access to a personal computer. Individuals desirous of receiving a computer through this program should complete an official application. Applicants should secure the endorsement of a sponsoring organization such as Rotary, local schools, Boy Scouts, church, community organizations, etc. A committee will review the applications and establish a list of qualified applicants based upon need. We hope to begin distributing the donated computers in September. Computers will be awarded to citizens of Howard County qualifying on a first come first serve basis after they have been notified of their qualification. Working computers of at least 486 class, including Windows operating system and associated application software, a keyboard, color monitor and mouse are being sought. Please do not donate items that are inoperative or in need of repair. If you have questions as to whether or not equipment you have might be of use in the program, please contact: Joe Vollmer Boy Scouts Sagamore Council 765-452-8253 Do you or your organization have working but obsolete equipment that you would be willing to donate? The Computer Closet program will take your old equipment and make sure it finds a good and useful home. Donations will be accepted at the Salvation Army Thrift Store each Saturday in July and August from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Kokomo Rotarians will be at this location each Saturday morning to receive your donation. Donated computers will in turn be cleaned up and reconfigured by members of the Kokomo BSA Explorer Post and students at IVY Tech, and then donated to individuals selected by the program. Over the last three years, the program has supplied over 200 needy Kokomo citizens of all ages with working computers. Can you help us beat those numbers this year? Thanks for considering participation in the program. If you have any questions please call Dave Luitweiler at 765-868-0073. |
