The trade of carpentry includes many phases of the construction industry, such as milling fashioning, welding, joining, assembling, erecting, fastening or dismantling of all material of wood, plastic metal, fiber, cork and composition and all other structural materials, floor covering including vinyl, wood, laminate and carpets. The handling, cleaning, erecting, installing and dismantling of machinery, equipment and all materials are phases of the millwright area of carpentry.

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America is putting forth an all-out effort not only to train as many people as possible for entry into the field of carpentry, but to offer training for those who are already journeyman carpenters in upgrading their present abilities and expanding their knowledge and skills so that they may be familiar with and prepared for all innovations. Further, new training programs are being set up to educate carpenters in other phases of construction coming under their jurisdiction, such as special training programs in modular construction.

Apprenticeship programs sponsored by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, jointly implemented by Brotherhood and contractor/management offer a number of fringe benefits to those participating, such as retirement pension, health and welfare programs, vacation allowances, overtime pay stipulations and adequate wages. Such benefits also vary according to the area as they are contained in the collective bargaining agreement. Union sponsored programs perpetuate good working conditions and adequate wages and make every effort to maintain safe working conditions.
