The Mental Health Association was founded in 1951 and is one of 62 Indiana Chapters. It is
affiliated with both MHAI in Indianapolis and NMHA in Alexandria, VA. It is a not-for-profit,
United Way Agency that had 429 members in 2000. Staff includes 2 full-time and 3 part-time
volunteers. Mental Health Education: Sandwich Board Series � fall,
spring and summer lunch-hour series of lectures on mental health related topics. Workshops and Seminars � programs on a variety of topics of current
interest �I�m off to school� Coloring Books � given to all Howard County kindergarten
students to help with the transition from home to school. �One Voice� Newsletter �
six issues a year to association members, covering association�s news and research updates,
words of wisdom, and mental health articles. Library � videotapes, audiotapes, books,
and literature on mental health related topics. �Let�s Talk About Mental Health� �
one (fifty minute) talks on mental health/mental illness topics, for sixth graders. Consumer Programs: BeFriend Program � one-on-one match of community volunteers with consumer of mental health services. Gold Volunteers �
volunteers visiting nursing homes and hospitals Social Club � socialization
activities for consumers Friend-To-Friend � volunteers corresponding and visiting
with patients in state hospitals Christmas Gift Lift � annual drive to collect, wrap,
and deliver Christmas gifts to consumers in our community as well as those in state hospitals
and forgotten nursing home residents services. Support Groups: Panic/Anxiety Disorder Support Group � educational, emotional support
and encouragement for those suffering panic/anxiety disorder. Widow-to-Widow � social
activity program for widows. TLC� Together We Learn to Cope � support group of families and friends of the mentally ill. Advocacy: Carrier Alert � program in cooperation with mail-carriers watching for accumulated mail in the boxes of the elderly and handicapped. Legislation Alert � monitoring legislation actively and advocating for mental health. |
