The goal of Habitat for Humanity is to provide a decent house in a decent community for Gods People in Need. We are a Christian organization that serves all people and that seeks to establish a partnership between families seeking simple, decent housing and the volunteers of Habitat for Humanity. We offer a hand up, not a hand-out; we are co-workers, not case workers.
Partner families must have sufficient income to purchase a home from Habitat, but not enough income to purchase a home through conventional means. Families purchase a new or rehabilitated home from Habitat for Humanity using a 0% interest mortgage. How does the partnership homeowners work? Habitat is not a giveaway program, but is a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing ministry are involved in the work. Each homeowner family is required to invest sweat equity hours into the construction of their home. This reduces the cost of the house, increases the pride of the ownership, and develops positive relationships among diverse people. How are the partner families selected? Families apply to local Habitat affiliates. A family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, willingness to become partners, and ability to repay the loan. Each affiliate follows a non-discriminatory policy. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families to receive Habitat houses. A typical new home built by Habitat for Humanity has three bedrooms and approximately 1040 square feet of living space. Volunteers contribute almost all of the approximately 3000 hours of required labor. Habitat for Humanity of Kokomo has built or rehabilitated 15 homes since its inception in 1988. How you can help: You can make a tax-deductible donation to Habitat for Humanity of the Kokomo Community, Inc. and mail it to the address listed above.
